The gas holiday proposed by state Sen. George Maziarz and the Republican Senate is nothing more than meaningless, irresponsible lip service. By cutting the gas tax now, even for a short time, many highway reconstruction projects that are needed would not be funded.

Every 45 seconds, someone in the United States has a stroke. Stroke kills twice as many women as breast cancer every year. Despite being the third leading cause of death and the leading cause of adult disability in this country, fewer than one in five Americans can recognize a symptom of a stroke.

I came across an interesting article concerning the gas prices from which barrels of oil are the resources. The Investor’s Business Daily, May 19, article started: “With the price of oil spiking above $127 a barrel, the search for scapegoats has begun. Some point to the Saudis, OPEC’s No. 1 producer. Others blame the oil companies. We have a better candidate: Congress.”

This is written in response to Thom Jennings’ article, “Generating winds of change,” in Thursday’s, May 22, paper.

As I was pumping gas today at the KK Service Station in Clarendon ($4.01 per gallon!), I was reminded — once again — of how the war in Iraq is really hitting me hard in the wallet. The war has been a huge factor in the weakening of what used to be a strong US dollar. The war diverts much-needed funding from development of alternative energy and conservation technologies.

Having read the recent articles about my sister Rosalind Lind’s candidacy for the school board I was inspired to say a few words on her behalf. While I must admit this is a bit personal for me, I think it is important for the public to know something of her quality and character.

Currently, the federal, state and local governments are floating the idea of eliminating tax on gas for the summer months. We don’t need a temporary band-aid to fix the price of fuel, we need a long-term solution.

The voters of the Medina Central School District have an opportunity to elect a new member to the Board of Education on Tuesday. Someone who has done her homework!

Many people use the term “obscene profits” in regard to oil companies. I’m wondering ... in a capitalist system, just what is an obscene profit? There are roughly 6.5 billion people on the earth. Most of them use crude oil products in one way or another.
