READER LETTER: In support of Powers

As I was pumping gas today at the KK Service Station in Clarendon ($4.01 per gallon!), I was reminded — once again — of how the war in Iraq is really hitting me hard in the wallet. The war has been a huge factor in the weakening of what used to be a strong US dollar. The war diverts much-needed funding from development of alternative energy and conservation technologies. The war soaks up taxes that I would rather have invested in education, health care and jobs. I’m tired of the congressional representation that voted to get us into this mess on the basis of false evidence, that failed to plan for an end-game, that keeps approving blank checks, and that has failed to provide for the safety of military personnel on the ground in Iraq and after returning home. It’s time for a new kind of representation for the 26th Congressional District. That’s why I am supporting Jon Powers for Congress. Powers served with distinction in Iraq and he has a realistic approach to dealing with the mess that the Bush Administration has created in foreign policy over the last eight years. With a strong grassroots campaign strategy, Powers has gained the support of every Democratic Committee in the 26th District’s seven counties. He is the kind of candidate that inspires confidence and optimism, qualities badly needed in our district.
