ATV: Slow-speed pursuit ends in Barre.

Staff Reports
The Journal-Register

A slow-speed pursuit of an all-terrain vehicle through three different towns ended last night with the operator being arrested for driving while intoxicated.

The incident began shortly before 10 p.m., when police and EMS personnel were dispatched to the 15600 block of Lynch Road in the Town of Murray for a report of a man lying on the ground next to a 4-wheeled ATV. When emergency responders arrived, the man and his machine were no longer there.

A short time later while checking the area, Sgt. G.T. Gunkler saw a man riding the ATV and attempted to pull him over. The subject refused to stop and a pursuit ensued. Gunkler pursued the subject into the Town of Clarendon and then to the Town of Barre. In the 5200 block of Angevine Road, the man stopped in a residential yard and confronted Gunkler. Gunkler then used his taser, which had no impact on the individual.

The subject then got on his ATV and took off again. He struck a New York State Police car, operated by Trooper D.R. Metz of the Albion barracks, and continued on. The pursuit ended on Sheelar Road in Barre after the subject abandoned the ATV and was apprehended shortly after by Gunkler and Lt. R.E. Parry.

The ATV operator was identified as Steven D. Moore, 47, of Oakfield. He is charged with DWI, aggravated DWI, DWI on an ATV, reckless driving, failure to yield to police and other charges.

Moore is also charged with third-degree unlawful fleeing from a police officer and leaving the scene of an accident. He was also charged with fourth-degree criminal mischief for the damage to the car.

Moore appeared in the Town of Barre and was set bail of $2,500. Moore is due back in court on April 2.
