MOTORCYCLE AWARENESS: American Bikers Aimed Toward Education will meet Sunday to promote safety issues as the 2007 season revs up

By Mike Regan/reganm@gnnewspaper.com

The Orleans County chapter of American Bikers Aimed Toward Education will hold its annual rally this Sunday to kick off the season with safety in mind.

The gathering is being held for its 19th straight year, while May has once again been proclaimed Motorcycle Safety and Awareness Month by both the state and the county. Organizers say there are 27 chapters of ABATE and 3,200 members statewide. Approximately 80 bikers are affiliated with the local chapter.

“It’s also something that happens nationally,” said Fran Abrams, public relations spokeswoman for the county chapter.

Abrams said all of the various chapters will hold similar rallies during the course of the next week. This time of year is a crucial period for bikers, she said, when the often avid riders tend to hit the road as temperatures rise. Upwards of 250 motorcyclists have attended in the past.

“It depends on the weather of course,” she said. “If it rains we might get only a dozen.”

Vehicles following too closely and left turns made by motorcyclists are just some of the hazards bikers incur. Among others, those issues will be addressed at the gathering, said ABATE Legislative Representative Dale Graff.

“As far as the motorcyclists themselves, they have some responsibility too, like making themselves seen on the road and watching out for hazards on the road,” he said.

The rally will take place in front of Orleans County Courthouse on East State Street. After some words of awareness from ABATE activists and several politicians, the group will take a 50-mile ride led by a police escort from the Orleans County Sheriff’s Department, which will end back in Albion.

The event is free and will be held rain or shine.
