CHARACTER BUILDING: Kendall students give to the marines

KENDALL — Fifth-graders at Kendall Elementary School wrote letters, drew pictures and sent care packages to the Marines overseas this week, as part of a classroom lesson and practicing the school’s growing concentration on character education.
The inspiration for the project began with Valerie Gaesser's class after they were a part of this year’s Flag Day celebration on June 13, which featured Navy Seabee Iraq veteran John Ulmen.
In addition, Eileen Incardona, special education consultant teacher for fifth grade, has a personal connection with the troops, which also helped spark the letter-writing project. Her nephew is a Marine in Afghanistan, and she said the troops appreciate receiving letters and supplies.
Incardona said the letter-writing is an example of character education, especially teaching students the importance of respect and giving to others, and has been a growing school-wide initiative.
“Reading the students’ letters was really touching,” Incardona said. “The enthusiasm they have in honoring the Marines shows the students’ level of maturity and in respect to Kendall’s growing emphasis on character education.”
Christina Lewis is the online communication specialist with the Kendall Central School District.
