It’s a bird? It’s a plane? No, it is the Medina High School Mustangs celebrating their hero-filled week of fun with the theme “Superheroes Save Medina.”

Today kicks off a week full of events including a door decorating contest between the four classes and a bonfire held Oct. 1. All events lead up to the homecoming game on Friday against Alden High School.

“It’s an opportunity for students to show their school spirit,” said student association advisor Julie Webber. “They can come together as graduating classes and have fun together.”

Webber said that the students really look forward to a lot of different things. She said that the hall decorating lets students be creative and show their artistic side. She also said that many athletes like the goofy games and there are a lot of kids who are good at performing who enjoys the skit competition.

Each day of the week, the students will dress in different attire, all in honor of the superhero theme. Students dress Monday in camouflage for “Hide from your Villain!” day. Tuesday is “Old Folk Day” as part of save the old lady/old man. Class Color Day is Wednesday and Thursday, students will dress like their favorite superhero. On Friday, the students will show their Mustang red and blue spirit on Spirit Day.

Besides dress-up days, there will be a class competition where members of each class will participate in games, a skit and other events pertaining to each grades’ own theme. The seniors will be Batman; juniors have Spiderman; sophomores have Fantastic Four; and the freshman will become the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. According to Webber, the student association met over the summer and decided the overall theme. Then each grade choice their individual superhero theme.

Students will gather Friday for a districtwide pep rally at Vets Park, where they will be joined by students from Oak Orchard and Wise middle schools. There a parade of athletes will take place, and the homecoming king and queen will be revealed.

“It’s nice school spirit and atmosphere,” Webber said about the week to come.

Varsity coach Eric Valley said that the team has faced some challenges this season but hopes for the best.

“We’re definitely going to have our hands full,” Valley said. “We’re playing Alden who is number one in our league. We’ve had quite a few injuries but we’re hoping our younger guys can step up and if we play mistake-free football then good things will happen.”
