An update on the $10 million capital improvement project, passed in May 2007, was given by board member Kevin Doherty during Monday’s Albion Central School District board meeting.

Doherty, who was happy with the progress, announced that the elementary school roof was complete, along with new countertops in the building; the pits in the bus garage were fixed; and the new roof was complete; The bricks were repaired and restored in the middle school and high school; New movable doors were placed in the high school gym; and painting, sidewalks and elevator repair was done. Doherty also said that a drainage problem was addressed, the soccer field had an addition to the parking lot and a new air system was installed under the ice rink.

“We’ve done fairly well,” said Doherty, who told the board that most of the extra amenities they wanted, were obtained. “We have a handle on what needs to be done.”

Next summer, the gym floor and other modifications around the high school will be done, including the new entrance off the west hall. The new entrance will provide more display room, and bathrooms for those coming to baseball and softball games.

School Board President Michael Bonafede wanted to make sure that everyone understood that the capital improvement project was already paid for and voted on. Even with the tighter budget next year, money can not be taken out of the fund.

In other board news:

n Senior Jake Hayes was presented the leadership award for his work around the high school. Principal Mickey Edwards said that Hayes is a part of many activities in school, but his behavior demonstrates his true leadership. He said Hayes regularly meets with new students, shows them around and helps them transition to the new setting.

“Jake’s actions show to all the high school what a student leader is,” Edwards said.

Student James Tyler Reese also received a character award from the board for his work in the community.

“James demonstrates the up most character in and out of the nursing home,” Edwards said. “He is constantly looking for ways to help the residents, as well as his fellow students.”

n Members of the Auxiliary Police received the board’s Friends of Education certificate.

“They help us on security and crowd control at many of our events,” said Superintendent Ada Grabowski. “So it is certainly with great gratitude that we thank them for the work they have done for us.”

Those receiving the award included Capt. Jack Monell, Lt. Joe Riley, Lt. David Thom, Sgt. Raymond Hertel, and officers Larry Bale, Connie Corke, Alan Keiffer and Brian Ugorek.

Bonafede presented the award to each person, thanking them for their work in the community and with the children of the district.

“One of the things we really try to focus on in this district is service to the community,” Grabowski said. “We appreciate everything you have done.”
