MEDINA A 14-year-old boy was arrested Saturday by Medina Police after he allegedly broke into the Medina campus of Genesee Community College. The suspect was arrested running from the scene after allegedly throwing a brick into one of the college’s back windows to try and gain entry.

According to Police Chief Jose Avila, the teen saw a large flat-screen television in the college and wanted to take it.

“In his statement, he admitted his intention was to steal something that night,” Avila said.

The college’s security system alerted the police to the break-in at 10:40 p.m. and Sgts. Robert Eaton and Michael Borrell intercepted and arrested the teen as he running from the building. He was found with burglary tools, police said. The damage is estimated to exceed $1,000.

Avila said that the suspect is a local boy who reportedly also confessed to breaking into the Gardner Citgo Station on Maple Ridge Road on a previous date.

GCC Associate Dean Jim Simon said that the window was fixed on Monday and everything is back to normal at the Medina campus.

“Nothing was missing,” he said. “Nothing other than the window appears to be damaged.”

He said that the couches around the broken window will also need to be cleaned because of fallen glass.

This is an ongoing investigation, and police said they would question the suspect about other burglaries in the area. The teen is being held in a juvenile detention center awaiting arraignment in Orleans County Court.
