ALBION: Students learn about Native American culture

Learning about the culture and heritage of Native Americans first-hand, the fourth-grade students at Albion Elementary School participated in a day full of activities, games and education.

Teacher Jeff Radder said Native American history is one of the major units in the fourth-grade curriculum.

He said Native American Day was created to wrap up the unit and help the students incorporate what they had learned.

“It’s a fun thing for the kids to do,” Radder said. “It’s something different. Something they’ve never done before.”

The students played lacrosse, danced, made wampum belts, dream catchers and bracelets and participated in traditional Native American games.

“You got to do a lot of fun things and learn a lot of things we haven’t learned before,” said student Vadda Dibley.

Both Dibley and Kimberly Keeler enjoyed the day full of activities. They said they liked playing the games with root beer and making bracelets.

“We learned a lot and made a lot of things,” Keeler said.
