NEXT STOP: SYRACUSE

Medina Journal-Register — MEDINA — The Medina Mustang Marching Band is on track to take a fourth consecutive class championship at the New York State Field Band Band Conference finals, which are Sunday at the Carrier Dome.

Medina ended their lead-up to the championship with a strong performance of “Coming Home,” their 2012 field band show, at Webster High School this weekend.

With the weather cooperating, Medina faced three schools in the Small Schools 1 Class Saturday at Webster, where eight bands in total competed. In addition to the bands that competed the crowd was entertained by the Prime Time Brass Players.

The Mustang Band took first place with a score of 87.1 for their military-themed show, followed by East Irondequoit (84.45) and Leroy (82). According to the New York State Field Band Conference, Medina’s score was the highest by a Small Schools 1 Class band in competition this fall, with the 85.4 recorded by the Mustang Band at Victor Oct. 13 the second-highest this year.

Next Sunday is the grand finale of the 2013 field band season. All 52 bands in the New York State Field Band Conference compete for the Governor’s Cup at the Carrier Dome in Syracuse. Medina is looking for a fourth-straight state class championship.

It will be a full day of music for hard core band enthusiasts, which performances beginning at 8 a.m. with Small School 3 and proceeding through all six classifications, concluding at approximately 10 p.m.

The Small Schools 1 class begins at 5:30 p.m., with Medina scheduled to take the field at 6:35pm. There are two guest performances by the University of Buffalo, who performed last month at Medina’s Fall Festival of Bands, and the Syracuse University Band.

The Marching Band encourages the community to be part of the caravan heading to Syracuse to show support for a group of students who have been working hard since last summer in an effort to present their show in the best way they can.
