Sandstone Hall of Famers to be unveiled

Medina Journal-Register — On Oct. 10 the Medina Sandstone Society will perform two functions at the same time at a two-hour cocktail reception at the Medina Theater (former Diana). The society, now almost a decade old, will use the large showplace and its big movie screen to announce the new Sandstone Hall of Fame. Over 100 supporters and guests are being specially invited for the viewing and it will be a “thank you” event. The Hall of Fame committee said it will be a token of appreciation to those who have given financial aid to Sandstone Society programs during 2013.

“These fine folks will be in on the ground floor to view the beginnings of our Hall of Fame and it provides a time to say thanks to them,” declared James Hancock, chairman of the committee. “We think the screened images these people will see will make an outstanding short program on the tenth.”

Hancock, along with David Miller and John Slack, has spent part of the summer creating the Hall of Fame as a means of saluting structures all over the world that have been created using the famous Orleans County building stone.

When the idea of a “Hall” was suggested the three men volunteered to be the creators and as part of their task they have toured New York State taking pictures and collecting information. “It is absolutely astounding when you discover the thousands of great buildings of Medina sandstone that still exist in excellent condition,” said committee-member Miller.

About two dozen nominations were received for the first year of the Hall of Fame and the cocktail reception at the local theater will provide a time for projecting these structures on the big screen and providing a narrative of each.

The reception will run from 4 to 6 p.m. with hors d’oeuvres and cash bar and a few messages from leaders of the MSS.
