'Supplier' brings family together

Medina Journal-Register — MEDINA — The development of a class assignment into a published novel has been a surprising experience for members of Sarah Stefaniak’s family.

Stefaniak may be the next Suzanne Collins. Her debut novel, “My Supplier,” is set to be released in May after growing out of a short story that very quickly grew into a much-larger project.

Stefaniak’s class was asked to write a single-paged short story with a strong character. She ended up writing a dozen pages about Daisy, an agressive heroine living in a futuristic dystopia, with the story eventually growing into a 358-page novel.

Stefaniak said her mom Carol suggested seeing if the story could get published after reading the growing novel. Dad Jim, a 1978 Medina High School graduate, found out the full-story later on in the process.

“I don’t think they realized how much I wrote,” Stefaniak said at a book signing at the Book Shoppe in Medina.

The teenage author, who lives in Ohio, came to Medina Saturday for a book signing and mini-family reunion. And aunts, uncles, cousins and other relatives all stopped by to get early copies.

The location of the book signing has an important connection to the Stefaniak family. Book Shoppe owner Sue Phillips noted that Sarah’s uncle Dave established the Main Street bookstore two decades ago.

My Supplier tells the story of a futuristic dystopia, where a dictatorship has established two very different societies. An upper class lives an utopian lifestyle, the rest are imprisoned in the slums, serving as personal organ donors for the elites.

“There’s an adventure to stop that from happening,” said Stefaniak, a fan of Hunger Games, Twillight and Harry Potter series.

She’s already 70 pages into a second book in her own series. It will surely have a prized place at the Book Shoppe.
