Miles named managing editor of J-R

Medina Journal-Register — Following an extensive search, longtime employee Joyce Miles has been chosen to lead the newsrooms at the Medina Journal-Register and the Lockport Union-Sun & Journal.

Miles began her new duties on Monday, taking on the role of managing editor of the two papers.

Miles began her career in the news business in the US&J composing department in 1991, designing advertisements and laying out the newspaper when the paper was headquartered at the corner of Summit and South Transit streets.

She moved into the newsroom six years later, doing graphic design and picking up some writing assignments over time, eventually getting a regular beat covering the Town of Wilson. Over the years she has covered nearly every town and school district in the newspapers' coverage areas. She served as the managing editor of the J-R from 2001 until 2004 when she returned to the Lockport newsroom.

"I missed reporting," she said.

She most recently served as the beat reporter for the City of Lockport and Niagara County government bodies.

Miles said she's excited about the opportunity to move the papers forward — even if it means she may miss reporting again.

"I want to let people know that this is their newspaper," she said. "I want us to cover the things that matter to them."

As such, Miles is soliciting input from readers in both communities about the types of stories they're looking for in the papers.

"I answer the phone. I respond to emails. I'll come have coffee with you," she said. "Tell me what's on your mind."

J-R and US&J Publisher Diane Crowe said the newspapers are lucky to have Miles at the helm.

After doing a nationwide search, the newspaper realized that the best candidate for the job was someone who has been here all along, Crowe said.
