Medina Journal-Register — SHELBY — A new member’s idea has sparked into a special occasion for the Shelby Volunteer Fire Company Ladies Auxiliary.
Stacey Benz has only been a member of the Ladies Auxiliary for a few months, but she’s already added a title — Easter Sunday Brunch Chairperson. The brunch, which will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. March 31, is designed to provide an enjoyable experience that will offer the convenience of dining locally on Easter Sunday.
The committee is working to hopefully have the brunch become an annual event. The Fire Hall, on Route 63 in Shelby Center will be set up with “restaurant style” seating so families can sit together.
Benz said most people enjoy spending the day with family, and many enjoy an Easter Sunday brunch, however, with the loss of the Apple Grove Inn, there are very few local restaurants that offer Easter meals.
“I came from a big family, and we liked places where we could be all together,” said Benz, who noted that the family-style seating and table service for drink orders make the event different from events like last weekend’s pancake breakfast. “We’re going to seat the people down so they’re just with their family because it’s a holiday … we tried to make it more special.”
The brunch will be set up as all you can eat, buffet style. The menu items will feature over 20 items, including typical breakfast foods such as carved ham, sausage gravy and biscuits, eggs, waffles, home fried potatoes, breads and fruits, as well as dinner items such as baked chicken, scalloped potatoes, buttered corn, and glazed carrots.
Entertainment will also be provided during the brunch. Sheryl Watts will be making balloon creations for children. Sheryl is well known in the Medina area for her clever balloon hats and animals.
The fire company’s junior members are planning an “Easter Egg Hunt” during the day for those attending the brunch if the weather is favorable.
The cost of the dinner is $12 for adults and $8 for Children ages 6-10. Children under 5 are free. Presale tickets are on sale now from Fire Company and Auxiliary members. More information is available at www.shelbyfire.com.
Benz said proceeds from the event will assist in equipment purchases for both the fire company and ladies auxiliary, which is purchasing items for when the facility is used for weddings. Recently purchased items like tablecloths and chair covers will be used at the event.
