Appeal nears goal

Medina Journal-Register — Orleans County churches have pledged more than $85,000 to the annual Catholic Charities Appeal, according to Catholic Charities of Western New York.

St. Mary Church in Holley has pledged $11,262, St. Mark Church in Holley has pledged $2,986, Holy Family Church in Albion has offered $32,362 and Holy Trinity Church in Medina has promised $38,742 toward the campaign.

The appeal has reached 80 percent of its goal of $10.7 million. In Niagara County, $747,657 has been raised, which is 83 percent of the goal.

St. John the Baptist Church in Lockport has  pledged $83,420 and All Saints has pledged $54,936. St. Brendan on the Lake Church in Newfane is giving $31,429 and Immaculate Conception Church in Ransomville pledged $21,425.

“All Saints has already exceeded all that they did last year. They have a motivated team,” said Stephen Ulrich, a native of Lockport who is the Catholic Charities 2013 Appeal chairman. In the 2012 appeal, All Saints raised $54.800.

St. John the Baptist is $18,000 away from last year’s total of $101,000.

“We’re off to a good start across the eight counties in the diocese. There’s been a  good response,” said Ulrich. “We’re on pace to beat last year’s total.”

“People understand the economy is tough,” Ulrich said. “So many rely on us.  ... You’re helping your neighbor. That’s the way to look at it.”

The appeal still has over $2 million to raise and volunteers will be working to achieve the goal until the conclusion of Catholic Charities’ fiscal year on June 30.

Funds raised will help fund Catholic Charities’ programs across 61 sites in WNY and not all the donors or benefactors are Catholic. Catholic Charities services are non-denominational. Last year, Catholic Charities provided assistance to more than 5,200 individuals in eastern Niagara County.

“People understand the good work that we do,” Ulrich said. “We’re hoping to get younger donors. Even $10 or $20 give would really help us to get to our goal.”

St. Peter Church in Lewiston has pledged $84,735 and. St. Jude the Apostle Church in North Tonawanda raised $83,747. Our Lady of the Lake Church in Barker raised $14,937.
