GAINES — An Albion man died Sunday after a head-on collision that injured two others early Sunday in the Town of Gaines.
According to the Orleans County Sheriff's Office, the incident occurred at around 2:45 a.m. Sunday in the 14600 block of Ridge Road, approximately 1/2 mile west of Crandall Road.
The collision occurred when a westbound vehicle that was traveling along the south shoulder of the road struck an eastbound vehicle that ran off the south side of the roadway. The impact of the crash spun both vehicles so they each came to rest facing opposite of their original direction of travel.
The sole occupant of the eastbound vehicle was Cameron R. Hess, 22, Albion. Hess was pronounced dead at the scene by Orleans County Coroner Charles Smith after being extricated from his vehicle by Albion firefighters. He was transported to the Monroe County Medical Examiner's Office in Rochester for autopsy.
Both occupants of the westbound vehicle were transported to Strong Memorial Hospital for their injuries. Edward L. Schneider, 21, Medina, the driver of the vehicle, was extricated by Albion firefighters and flown to Rochester by MercyFlight. Christopher A. Swan, 21, Medina was partially ejected through the windshield. He was able to extricate himself from the wreckage and was transported to Rochester by COVA.
An investigation into the crash is being conducted by Sheriff's Deputy J.A. DeFilipps, assisted by Deputies D.E. Foeller Jr. and D.S. Klips, Sergeant D.E. Draper Jr. and nvestigator C.L. Black.Contact reporter Jim Krencik at 798-1400, ext. 6327.
