Medina Journal-Register — Starting in about a week, the Medina Canal Basin will be bustling with constant activity.

Thursday, during the Orleans County Famers Market, the annual Kid’s Day is scheduled. The market, which runs from noon to 5 p.m. every Thursday through the fall, will serve as the welcoming ground for the Lois McClure.

“We’ve confirmed the Lois McClure,” said Jim Hancock of the Medina Tourism Committee.

The schooner was originally set to visit Medina about a month or so ago, but inclement weather and various water and flooding issues along the Erie Canal delayed the vessel’s arrival to Western New York until this past week.

“They’re coming in from a roundabout way,” Hancock explained, noting how the ship has already sailed through Medina and is on its way back from the west for its visit next week.

The Lois McClure is supposed to arrive in the Canal Basin at 4 p.m. Hancock said there will be some type of welcoming ceremony, and what is sure to be a packed Farmer’s Market should add to the atmosphere.

“There will be a lot of activity in the Basin all day long,” he said.

One night later, there is a classic Cruise-In at the Canal Basin, and on Saturday, the Medina Tourism Committee is sponsoring a free night of “blues, bluegrass, and barbecue.”

The concert, which will feature the Dave Viterna Band and the Creek Bend Band, is set to run from 4 to 8 p.m. Baby Ribs will provide the barbecued chicken and ribs for the event, which lists the Medina Theatre Company as the rain venue.

Also on Saturday, the annual Medina Historic Walk is scheduled at Boxwood Cemetery.

But the Lois McClure kicks off the weekend Thursday afternoon. After the welcoming ceremony, the boat will open for tours from 5 to 8 p.m.
