Medina Journal-Register — Tuesday Club holds meeting

The Medina Tuesday Club met Oct. 22 at the home of Colleen Moody. Following the business meeting, and in keeping with this year’s theme, two books on gardening were presented.

Member Cindy Hellert summarized the book, “Japanese Gardens: Tranquility, Simplicity, Harmony,” by Geeta Mehta and Kimi Tada. According to the authors, the essence of the Japanese garden can be traced back to pre-Buddhist roots, when nature was deeply understood and held sacred. Every stone was believed to have a soul, and plants that articulate the beauty of seasonal changes are carefully selected to highlight the rhythms of nature. Three main types of gardens were discussed in the book: Temple Gardens, Private Gardens, and Public Gardens. Hellert chose to focus on one example from each of the types. She also spoke about some of the more notable and innovative garden designers in Japanese history.

The second presenter was Bonnie Hartway, who gave a talk on the history of English landscape design. She introduced some of the famous names involved in the profession including Lancelot “Capability” Brown, who worked in the 18th Century and influenced many of the famous English gardens of the time.

The next meeting will take place Nov. 12 at the home of Kathy Boice.
