Orleans County 4-H Fair set for next week

Medina Journal-Register

Medina Journal-Register — The hamlet of Knowlesville is going to be very busy next week when the annual Orleans County 4-H Fair kicks off.

The fair will feature a number of different events, as well as the traditional 4-H staples.

Every night between the fair office and the Trolley Building will see a different type of event. On Monday there will be a community garage sale, and on Thursday there is a motorcycle cruise-in, for instance.

Saturday, on the final day of the fair, is the event “Kids Love Trucks.” This will be an opportunity for Orleans County’s emergency vehicles to be on display. From area fire departments to police departments and everything in between, the trucks will allow the youth in attendance a chance to see what Orleans County has in terms of emergency preparedness, and what it can do.

The 4-Hers will be on hand throughout the week, and county fair officials said the numbers of animal exhibitors are up this year. The fair is a culmination of some participants’ hard work over the course of the year. Among the items 4-H members will show are robots, dairy cows, horses, and dogs.

There is also a batch of 4-H youths entered in the fair’s other competitive categories, including crafts, baked goods, and stories.

One major 4-H highlight is the market auction on Saturday, July 27. The preview for the show is 3:30 p.m., with the show set for 4 p.m.

“Youths purchase and raise their own animals for auction,” explained Kerri McKenna, 4-H Community Educator. “They’re responsible for soliciting buyers, keeping a project record, and coming up with goals for their animal or animals.”

McKenna said the auction is also an educational tool for the public.

“Even though we live in a rural area, there’re still a lot of misconceptions about what goes into bringing safe, healthy food to the community,” she said. “We’re lucky to have a lot of well-stocked farms in the area.”

Entertainment-wise, some shows scheduled include Chainsaw Chicks, a talent show, Fearless Flores, and Midway of Utica, which is this year’s provider of games and rides. Among the rides is a 90-foot Ferris Wheel.
