Canal Clean Sweep-ers stepping up this weekend

Medina Journal-Register — Statewide and in Niagara County, the seventh annual Canal Clean Sweep will be held this weekend.

Canal Clean Sweep has state agencies and local volunteer groups joining forces to beautify the Canalway Trail and canal areas in advance of Earth Day and the summer tourism season.

Three cleanup sessions are planned in Lockport and Middleport.

The city’s Canal Development Task Force has organized a crew to work from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Saturday, starting at the Canal Street pavilion. Volunteers are signed up from GM Component Holdings, the Kiwanis, Optimist and Rotary clubs and the Key Club at Lockport High School. Additional volunteers are welcome; bring gloves and, if you’re able, a rake and some trash bags.

First Presbyterian Church of Lockport is organizing a crew that will meet at 12:30 p.m. Sunday at the entrance to Upson Park. For more information, contact Donna or Jim Garver at 433-3865.

In Middleport, the Jeddo Canal Brigade will clean the trail on the north side of the Erie Canal, from the Carmen Road bridge to the Peet Street bridge, starting at 9:30 a.m. Saturday. For more information, contact Georgette Stockman at (585) 735-7343.
