Witch & Crow show gives fall an early welcome

Medina Journal-Register — Three years ago Danette Oakes decided that the area needed to usher in fall with a craft show geared to the changing in seasons.

This Saturday, thanks to that show’s growing success, the Witch and Crow Primitive Craft Show will be held at the Sacred Heart Club in Medina from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

“In our area there really wasn’t a good quality fall show, so I handpicked the vendors,” Oakes said.

There are about 20 vendors, all of whom deal in primitive arts or antiques, Oakes said.

“I’ve met many of them over the years, and I only picked the ones that had well-made quality items,” she added.

Holding the show at the Sacred Heart Club helps keep it from getting too big, and Oakes said that leads to a “cozy” atmosphere for those who attend.

“It’s so beautiful when you walk in, you don’t know what you want to do first,” she said. “There’s antique furniture and the primitives…and people who show up can’t wait for the next one.”

When the show started a few years ago, Oakes said she was nervous because she had no clue whether people would show up or not.

“It was a new show, and getting vendors to a new show is difficult,” she explained. The fears were alleviated, though, when roughly 300 people went through the doors in year one. That number improved a little last year, and Oakes said she is looking forward to seeing how well the show draws this year.

Oakes said fall is a “refreshing” time of year, a time that brings a certain sense of excitement.

“Some people just don’t like the heat and humidity of summer,” she said, calling herself one of those people.

“I love everything about fall and Halloween,” she addd. “The crispness of the air and the leaves, the difference in the wind, plus all the fall colors…it just makes for a warm and cozy atmosphere.”
