Medina Journal-Register — Oak Orchard Elementary School students who had gym class on Thursday got a more unique workout than normal.

As part of the “World’s Largest Sport Stacking Event,” the students spent the class going from station to station stacking different sizes of cups. The event, sponsored by the World Sport Stacking Association (WSSA), is part of Guinness World Records Day. The goal was to have people from all over the world stack and take down various pyramids in prescribed patterns at a quick pace, and to combine each stacking challenge with a fitness activity.

Last year saw 483,658 stackers participate in the event, which bested the 2011 total of 412,259. This year, the WSSA once again sponsored STACK UP!, which is its annual attempt at getting the Guinness World Record for most people sport stacking at multiple locations in one day.

The event coincides with physical education classes. According to the WSSA, sport stacking sees students race against the clock, compete in relays, and often combine some sport stacking with a fitness challenge as part of each specific gym class.

At Oak Orchard, students stacked cups while in position for a push-up and held multiple skip relays to stack cup pyramids, among other activities.

The WSSA expected to break its own record this year, as stackers from across the United States, Hungary, Germany, Israel, South Korea, New Zealand, Columbia and Taiwan all participated.

WSSA Founder and CEO Bob Fox said the Guinness event, which marked its eighth year Thursday, “promotes hand-eye coordination, fitness, teamwork, speed and lots of fun.”

The smiles on the faces of the students Thursday was evidence of such fun.
