Medina Journal-Register — Today is Black Friday, and three days from now is Cyber Monday.

But Saturday is also unique, and is more apropos for Orleans County: Small Business Saturday.

This fourth annual event spans the nation, and this year it has expanded to included more communities. Individual businesses who are participating in the local area will be recognized by doormats with the ShopSmall logo.

In Medina, the event coincides with the annual festivities involved with the village’s Olde Tyme Christmas celebration. Cindy Robinson, the Medina Business Association president, said the events falling on the same time is “coincidental, but it works perfectly for us.”

Robinson added, “We encourage people to shop small and local all the time, so I think it’s kind of cool that they’re happening on the same day.”

Several Main Street businesses are planning to participate in the day, Robinson said.

Elsewhere, the Village of Albion also has a number of participating businesses in this year’s Small Business Saturday. Sidney Beaty, the village’s program coordinator, mentioned that the event began in 2010 as an annual holiday through an American Express-sponsored campaign.

The Orleans County Chamber of Commerce promoted the event to its members, and Executive Director Kathy Blackburn said Small Business Saturday is a way to promote the value of small business to the community.

“Shop small, shop local,” Blackburn said. “45 cents of every dollar stays in the county. You buy a cup of coffee in one place and they take the profits and go somewhere, and the profits there are used to go somewhere else.”

Blackburn continued, “If you buy local, stay local, you make your community thrive.”

According to Small Business Saturday organizers, this year’s event is occurring in more places than it has before and in more widespread fashion.
