Medina applies to host FFA event

Medina Journal-Register — MEDINA — The New York State FFA Convention is in Albion next spring, but the potential now exists for the event to return to Orleans County in 2014.

The Medina Board of Education gave its unanimous approval Tuesday for a proposed application to host the state convention in western Orleans County for the first time since 2001. The event would bring more than 1,000 visitors for three days of activities in and around Medina.

Medina FFA Advisor Todd Eick said the NYSFFA has reached out to Medina and other district to see if they would be able to host the convention due to the planned host, SUNY Morrisville, being unable to do so.

Eick helped in the planning of the 1999 state convention, which was also held in Medina, and the 2007 convention hosted by Albion. Bringing the convention back to Medina was an early goal that Eick brought to the district.

”When I was hired it was one of those things that I thought “there’s no reason I can’t do it” ,” Eick said. “It’s something Medina students need to witness, this can be a real awesome event for people to see what FFA really is about — career growth, leadership and personal growth .... and see that there are good, positive things happening in the community and statewide.”

According to Eick, the district has submitted a letter of intent to host the event, which would be held May 1-3, 2014. By hosting the event, Medina’s agricultural science, FFA and Jr. FFA members would get a chance to fully participate in the competitions, field trips and experiences of the event.

”This rejuvenated some fires, it’s given them a new spark,” Eick said. “This is a year and a half away, but to be excited about something that far in the future, that’s a great thing. That’s why were in education.”
