Court clerk accused of theft

Court was adjourned Wednesday evening for a Holley woman who is accused of stealing from a local town court bank account.

Tiffany J. VanWyngaarden, 30, was arrested Friday and charged with fourth-degree grand larceny and official misconduct.

Orleans County Sheriff’s Investigator Corey Black charged VanWyngaarden as a result of an investigation into the theft of money from Town Court where it was discovered that nearly $3,000 was missing from the Clarendon Town Court bank account.

VanWyngaarden had been the court clerk for more than two years in Clarendon, according to the sheriff’s office. It is alleged that in early 2010 started taking money that had come into the court through fines and surcharges.

The suspect appeared in Town of Murray Court on Wednesday where she was arraigned and entered a customary plea of not guilty, Orleans County District Attorney Joseph Cardone said Thursday. He said the lawyers will discuss the case and VanWyngaarden will be back in court next month.

The case may go to a grand jury.
