Arc gives awards at annual dinner

Medina Journal-Register — The Arc of Orleans County held its annual Best Friend Dinner this past Friday and recognized several people with awards.

Peggy Schreck won the honor of 2012 Best Friend. She has been associated with The Arc for over 10 years, volunteering in a variety of ways. She is a charter member of the Signature Series Planning Committee and has been a member of the Community Relations Committee in 2010. Schreck has also volunteered at Camp Rainbow for the Albion and Holley School Spell-A-Thon field trips and worked at many fundraising dinners for Meals on Wheels.

A retired teacher’s aide, Schreck also started volunteering at Rainbow Preschool in 2012. Overall she volunteered over 200 hours last year.

She and her husband, David, also support the agency’s Annual Appeal and Holiday Appeal.

Samantha Neal won the 2012 Community Service Award. She has been volunteering for the Bagels Group through The Arc. She helps the staff in assisting the individuals served in the younger group in a variety of community and in-house activities. Considered shy and soft-spoken, Neal was commended for her dedication, positive attitude, and desire to support disabled individuals in her community. The Arc called her a role model for the young individuals who participate in the Bagels Group.

Garnering the honor of Self-Advocate of the Year was Joseph Moltrup. Recognized as an energetic person who has made incredible strides and achieved many personal goals, Moltrup fought to find alternatives to the traditional services offered to him. Wheelchair-bound because of cerebral palsy, Moltrup also managed to complete a required physical education course at Genesee Community College.

Moltrup has also held a seasonal job at LynOaken Farms, where he was well liked by visitors and staff. He now works with his mother at her store, Della’s Chocolates in Medina. Among his goals now are being able to live as independently as possible and perhaps one day hold down a job in the sports field.
