JACKIE DAVIS: Mother's Day life moments

Medina Journal-Register — This year marks the quarter century anniversary of one of the most life-changing moments of my time on earth. Twenty-five years ago, I became a mom. I gave birth to the son who now shares this column with me, and my life has never been the same.

Growing up, I had been a big sister, helping out with two little brothers (one of them, seven years my junior). I had been the older cousin, always surrounded by a flock of younger ones at extended family gatherings. I loved being an aunt, and had always absolutely adored children.

As wonderful as all of these youthful experiences were, none of them could have ever fully prepared me for the beautiful, amazing, all-consuming depth of love I experienced when I became a mother myself. I felt this overwhelming rush of love with the birth of each one of our four sons, and I can truly say that I have never sensed anything on earth quite like it.

One of my earliest life dreams was to get married, and become the mother of four children of my own someday. I am tremendously honored to say that God lovingly made that dream come true. I married my college sweetheart, and we were blessed with Vincent, Marcus, Kyle and Tyler. Watching them grow up has been one of the greatest joys of my life, and I am eternally grateful.

This Sunday our nation will celebrate Mother’s Day. Sons and daughters of all ages will take time out to appreciate the mothers in their lives. Husbands and dads will help their kids make memorable life moments for moms with flowers, cards, brunches, gifts, breakfast-in-bed and more.

The very first official Mother’s Day celebration took place on May 10, 1908. Its founder, Anna Jarvis arranged for her mother’s favorite flower (white carnations), to adorn the mothers in attendance. History records that over 400 people came to that first Mother’s Day celebration. Now, more than a hundred years later, we still take time out to celebrate mothers in May, and carnations are very much a part of this historic tradition.
