New mammography suite dedicated

Medina Journal-Register — The culmination of several years of hard work paid off with a ribbon cutting on Tuesday night at Medina Memorial Hospital’s new mammography department.

Vice President of Patient Care Randy Neiswonger spoke to a small group who gathered for the Mammography Renovation Dedication Ceremony, and he said the completion of the project could not have happened without community support.

“This is a vital service to the women in the community and the county,” he said. Later, he added, “Breast cancer is one of the leading causes of death in women, and screening helps to fight it.

“We have a responsibility as a hospital to keep health in mind,” he continued, noting that the community’s support in every hospital endeavor is a key component in keeping the hospital running.

Specifically, he said the mammography renovation was something he considered “extremely important” because of how many people are affected by breast cancer.

Jeanne Crane, Orleans Community Health Foundation President, also addressed those in attendance. She thanked the donors who showed up to give their support, listing Bates Road Upholstery, Candlelight Cabinetry, Maedl’s Woodcraft, and Piano Lessons by Bonnie.

Crane also gave a sincere thank you to Kathy Vicknair and her family. Vicknair, a breast cancer survivor, founded Medina’s Pink Crystal Ball, which over the course of four events raised over $20,000 toward the new mammography suite.

After the ceremony, tours of the new facility were given to anyone interested. Crane said the new space was much more inviting than the old area and offered convenience to local women.

“We can take care of the women in the county,” Crane said. “They don’t have to travel too far now.”

As for the difference in the new and old spaces, Crane said the contrast was night and day.

“The furniture needed work and the room was cold and uninviting,” she recalled. “There was no privacy…it was so stark.”
