Medina Journal-Register — ROYALTON

The Town of Royalton has started discussions regarding the budget for the next fiscal year. Discussions have progressed to the point that the town board has cancelled its final budget workshop, which had been slated for Wednesday.

The budget for next year, presented on Sept. 23, calls for $6,102,076 in appropriations, with $2,860,684 to be raised in taxes.

The projected tax rate increase is 2.17 percent. The tax levy is increasing by only $74, which amounts to a zero percent increase. Supervisor Jennifier Bieber said, “We looked over every single line and kept the budget lean. I feel we did a really good job.”

The change in the tax rate means property taxes will move from $3.23 per $1,000 to $3.29 per $1,000 of assessed value. Bieber said the town benefitted from having more assessed value in creating its budget.

The state’s two-percent tax cap law applies only to the tax levy, and Bieber said the town is in excellent shape.

The public hearing for the town budget is set for Monday, Oct. 21, at 7 p.m. It is anticipated the budget will be adopted at the regularly scheduled meeting after the public hearing.

GAINES

In the wake of the preliminary forensic audit report announced to the public at Tuesday’s meeting in the Town of Gaines, the board has retained attorney Terry Connors as special council moving forward. Connors read the report on Tuesday.

More information will be reported on the audit as it becomes available.

SHELBY

The Town Board of Shelby voted unanimously to pass its own transient business law at its meeting on Tuesday. The Village of Medina passed a similar law last month.

The law requires visiting businesses to acquire a permit to conduct their business within town limits. There is a permit fee, and a small percentage of the visiting business’s gross sales total during its stay also goes to the town.
