Tea reading steeped in history

Medina Journal-Register — A number of people curious about what their futures hold visited The English Rose Tea Shoppe in Medina on Friday to have tea leaves read for them.

“Tea leaf readings have been done for centuries,” said the shop’s owner, Cindy Robinson. “I got the idea to do these when I was doing some research before opening the shop.”

Robinson said she pulled a few books out on the subject a few months ago and then decided to invite a reader to Medina after meeting one at the Steampunk Festival, which was held recently at Lynoaken Farms.

Janelle Rose, who lives in Orchard Park, sat at a table near the back of the shop and saw customers for about 15 minutes at a time. Some of those who sat for a reading asked specific questions, and some just wanted their fortunes told.

One person, Jeanne Anstey of Medina, said she enjoyed the experience.

“I liked what I heard,” she said. “I’d never had this done for me before.”

Anstey said Rose provided her with some “interesting specifics.”

Rose said she has always been into tea reading, tarot, and scrying (energy reading). After “dabbling” in the practice when she was younger, she decided to work to develop the practice into a talent.

Rose has been a showcased fortune teller at events like the Steampunk Festival and at the Wtiches Ball in Buffalo. She said it is enjoyable to give people details on things yet to happen.

“It’s fun to provide insight and guidance to people in ways most of them can’t access,” she said.

Robinson said it is possible that she will schedule another tea leaf reading at a yet-to-be-determined date.
