Medina Journal-Register — Middleport enacts seasonal parking ban
The overnight parking ban within the limits of the Village of Middleport will be enforced beginning Nov. 3 and run through April 6 by the Middleport Police Department.
The village board announced the ban at its regularly scheduled meeting on Monday. Although village code prohibits overnight parking throughout the year, it is usually only enforced during the winter months to ensure clear passage for snowplows while cleaning the village streets.
Medina Historical Society hosting Erie Canal author
The Medina Historical Society is hosting Gerry Stafford at 7 p.m. on Monday in the Town of Ridgeway office. Stafford, a Lockport resident, will speak about her research and writing experiences as they relate to her two books about the Erie Canal.
Stafford loves history, fishing, and the Canal. When searching for some local history books for her grandchildren, she realized that the titles available were dated and unappealing. This inspired her to write two fiction books for children: “Young Canaller” and “Young Canaller Story and Coloring Book.”
Inspired by a true event, the books tell of the difficult life of 13-year-old Kevin Cullane, who worked as a “hoggee” on the canal in the 1830s to earn money to bring his mother and sister from Ireland to the United States.
“Young Canaller” is geared toward readers ages 8 to 12, while the “Young Canaller Story and Coloring” book is for children 6 and older. The illustrations for the coloring book were created by Medina resident and Medina Historical Society member Erica Joan Wanecski.
