Mustangs to host semi

Medina Journal-Register — Post season playoff action gets under way at 7 p.m. Friday as Medina hosts Dunkirk in the Class B semifinals of the Section VI Chuck Funke Memorial Consolation Bowl.

Medina brings a 4-3 record into the playoffs while Dunkirk is at 2-5 after dropping a narrow 21-14 decision to rival Fredonia last weekend.

Medina is coming off a wild 56-34 victory over arch rival Albion in which sophomore quarterback Jason Hellwig threw a school record tying six touchdown passes including three to Lonnie Taylor and one each to Kyle Barna, Ben Austin and Danny Barnes.

Hellwig now has a total of 14 TD passes on the season which is second on the Mustangs all time list behind the 18 thrown by Levi Pace in 2008. Taylor has caught seven of those scoring passes and Barna four.

The meeting will be only the second between the schools. The Mustangs defeated the Mauraders in the only other meeting by a score of 33-20 in 1998.

Maryvale will take on East in the other B semifinal on Friday.

The semi winners will meet next Thursday for the Class B Chuck Funke Memorial Consolation Bowl title.

Albion vs. Tonawanda

Albion will host Tonawanda at 7:30 p.m. Friday in a non league matchup of 1-6 squads.

Running back Tyler Hughson, who scored three touchdowns in the loss to Medina last weekend leads Albion with a total of eight touchdowns on the season. Purple Eagles quarterback Jon Warne has thrown five touchdown passes.

Albion holds an 8-4 lead in the all-time series against Tonawanda. The Purple Eagles downed the Warriors 38-15 in the most recent meeting in 2010.

Barker/Roy-Hart vs. Amherst

Barker/Roy-Hart, which is riding a four game winning streak, visits Amherst at 5:30 this evening in a non league contest.

Brett Cole has scored nine touchdowns, Brad Bobbitt six and Jacob Haight four to lead the offense for Barker/Roy-Hart which is 4-3. Haight has also thrown four touchdown passes and kicked three field goals.

Holley vs. LeRoy

No. 7 seed Holley will visit No. 2 LeRoy at 7:30 p.m. Friday in the quarterfinals of the Section V Class C playoffs.

Cadizsh Norford has scord nine touchdowns and Zach Hogle six to spark the offense for Holley which is 4-3 on the season.

The victor will face the winner of the No. 6 Bath vs. No. 3 Elba/Bryon-Bergen game in the semifinals.
