Mustang stickmen romp in sectionals

Medina Journal-Register — Getting goal production from a dozen different players, Medina romped to a 22-0 victory over Gowanda Friday in the Section VI Class C lacrosse playoff opener at Vets Park.

Kyle Barna scored five goals and Ben Austin four to lead Medina’s scoring parade.

Derek Fuller, Tyler Valley and Jacob Hendershot each added two goals for the Mustangs as Brett Pecoraro, Aaron Feltz, Matt Zacher, Tyler Davies, Drew McMurray, Steven Hann and Anthony Grazioplene each netted one.

Austin now has 70 goals on the season and Barna 68.

Fuller also had three assists as Barna, Austin and Grazioplene each had two.

Tommy Zacher and Adam Cotter shared in earning the shutout in goal.

Making it seven wins in a row, Medina is now 12-5 on the season.

Setting the tone from the outset, Medina jumped out to a lightning quick 4-0 lead in the first two minutes as Barna scored twice, off assists from Pecoraro and Feltz, Austin tallied from Grazioplene and Fuller from Austin.

Barna had a total of three goals, Austin two and Fuller, Zacher and Davies one each in the opening period which finished with Medina in command 8-0.

Keeping the momentum, the Mustangs exploded for 11 goals in the second period to extend the lead to 19-0 at the half.

Austin Hendershot and Barna each tallied twice during that stretch as Fuller, McMurray, Hann, Graziolene and Valley each scored one.

The post season victory was the first for Medina in nine years since the Mustangs downed Silver Creek 24-13 in the 2004 Class C quarterfinals. Ironically, Medina went on to lose to Gowanda 16-7 in the semifinals. The Panthers twent on to defeat the Mustangs in their next five post season meetings (2005, 2006, 2008, 2010 and2011) before dropping Friday’s contest.

Medina next visits Akron Tuesday for a quarterfinal contest. The Tigers defeated the Mustangs 20-12 during the regular season. Akron ousted Medina 14-11 in last year’s quarterfinal round contest.
