Medina Journal-Register — Two Medina High runners, senior Nick Zagmester and freshman Holly Heil, will cap off outstanding ross-country seasons when they complete in the state Class C championship race Saturday at Elma Meadows.

“Over the last three weeks they have both been running outstanding,” Medina coach Troy Callard said. “I just want them to enjoy the experience and have fun. This is not something everyone gets to do.”

Zagmester and Heil both qualified for the state championships by placing fourth at the Section VI Class C race this past week which was also held at Elma Meadows.

“That is big for us as they know the course,” Callard said.

The previous week, Heil had finished second and Zagmester third at the Niagara-Orleans All-League meet.

“I’m really happy for Nick because it is his senior year and he  just put in so much work and did so much running over the summer to get ready for this season,” Callard said. “And it will be great experience for Holly as she is just a freshman.”

“They are both just so eager to learn it makes it easy to coach them,” Callard added. “I’ve told then to go out, relax and run just like they have been doing. Just do what they’ve been doing and over the last three weeks they’ve just been getting better and better.”

The Barker boys squad will be looking to defend its state title after capturing the Section VI Class D championship last weekend. The Raiders are led by the quintet of Jordan Bender, Bryce Moeller, Hayden Hathaway, Casey Webb and Sergio Cruz who placed 2-3-5-6-10 respectively at the sectional championship meet.

The N-O League will also be represented in the girls Class C race by Kelly Bochnewetch of Newfane and Eliza Papke of Akron.
