Medina Journal-Register — MEDINA — Forfeits were frequent during Friday evening’s non-league wrestling match between Medina and Kendall.
But when the matches were contested, the Mustangs shined. Medina wrestlers won four of seven contested matches — all victories coming by pin — and the Medina squad led by coach Eric Gross earned a 60-24 victory at the Clifford H. Wise Middle School gym.
Gross credited sophomore Charles Beach in particular for his efforts, as Beach — competing in the 182-pound weight class — earned a pin in 57 seconds over Kendall’s Mark Washington.
“Charles wrestled a nice match,” Gross said. “Both teams were missing a couple of guys due to injury; otherwise we could’ve had a few more contested matches. But it is what it is, and we’ll try to get our guys healthy over the break.”
Medina junior Nick Erway (126) pinned Riley Reis in 2:21, and Mustang freshman Brennen Callara pinned Paul Urguhart in just 41 seconds. Medina eighth-grader Cody Crane (160) pinned Jacob Weed in 2:51.
Kendall earned three victories, courtesy of Ray MacFarland (145), Mason PeQueen (152) and Josh Allaart (170). The victories of MacFarland and PeQueen came by decision, while Allaart’s win came by pin.
Medina improves to 2-1 on the season, 1-1 in Niagara-Orleans League play, and returns to action in the Niagara County Community College tournament on Jan. 3 and 4.
Fredonia 42, Barker/Roy-Hart 30
MIDDLEPORT — Barker/Roy-Hart won five straight bouts midway through the match, but perennial Section VI power Fredonia gutted out a 12-point victory in a non-league wrestling contest on Saturday afternoon.
The Barker/Roy-Hart surge was keyed by William Jensen (138), who won by pin, while decision wins were posted by Brent Bachman (120), Hayden Hathaway (126) and Ryan Ulrich (138). The five-win streak also included a forfeit, helping coach Keith Jones’ Barker/Roy-Hart squad close within nine points at 36-27.
But Barker/Roy-Hart could pull no closer, despite a decision win by Erik Herian (152) and a pin by James Brady (285).
Fredonia jumped out to a 27-0 lead early, before Barker/Roy-Hart began to slowly battle back.
