Medina Mustangs sending three to Sectionals

Medina Journal-Register — EDEN — Three Mustang grapplers will be wrestling for a spot in the New York State Wrestling Tournament this coming weekend at Niagara County Community College.

At the Class C Tournament on Saturday, Medina’s Brennan Callara, Joe Velez and Charles Beach finished in the top three of their respective weight classes.

Beach took third place at 182 pounds with a 6-4 decision over Jordan Brawley of Newfane.

“It was a familiar foe for him,” said Medina matmen coach Eric Gross. “It’s the third time he’s beat him. He did it once in the dual meet, once in the Lockport Tournament, and then today.”

Gross said Beach’s chances at the sectional tournament art as good as anyone else’s. “He lost 4-2 to the eventual winner today, so he’s right there.”

At 113 Joe Velez scored a late takedown to place third with an 8-7 score. He faced Barker/Roy-Hart’s Brent Bachman in a rematch of last weekend’s Niagara-Orleans League finals.

“He knew it would be a tight bout again,” Gross said of Velez. “He won the takedown game this time. He was more aggressive in this match, and it was close down to the last few seconds when he scored a takedown at the buzzer.”

Callara was the only Mustang to reach the finals, but he lost via fall. Facing Falconer’s Cameron Page, Gross said Callara got stuck in a tight cradle in the middle of the first period, leading to a second place finish.

“It happens, and you’ve gotta bounce back,” the coach said.

Also placing for Medina were Ben Howell (6th) at 145 and Kalvin Packer (5th) at 220.

Wrestling for the sectional tournament is set to begin  at 10 a.m. Saturday at Niagara County Community College in Sanborn.
