Rams prepping for N-O track campaign

Medina Journal-Register — MIDDLEPORT - Looking to rebound from last spring's 0-6 record, the Roy-Hart girls track team returns a solid nucleus with which to compete in the upcoming Niagara-Orleans League schedule.

The Lady Rams are led by the trio of senior Paige Flynn, who placed third in the 100, 200 and high jump at last year's All-League meet, senior Liz Offhaus, who placed second in both the shotput and discus and freshman Emma Lindke who placed fourth in the 400 hurdles.

The Lady Rams key returnees also include junior Melissa Zakrewski in the 800 and relays and sophomore Andrea Singleton in the distance events.

"We've got a nice mixture of veterans and young kids coming along," coach Chris Smith said. "We're hopeful of finding the perfect mix and balance."

The Roy-Hart boys squad, which posted a 3-3 N-O record last season, was hit hard by graduation including the loss of Frankie Pfeil (2nd in 1600 and 3200), Eddie Pfeil (4th in 3200 and 5th in 1600), Matt Veihdeffer (3rd in 400) and Andy Johnson (4th in 400 hurdles).

The Rams are led by seniors Jared Hinkson (800 and relays) and Tucker Ruhlen (hurdles) along with juniors Ben Werth (pole vault) and Kyle Shanahan (hurdles).

"We're very, very young on the guys squad as the team is dominated by freshmen and sophomores," Smith said. "We're definitely looking to rebuild. We have a lot of new talent."

Roy-Hart is scheduled to open the N-O season at Medina on April 18.
