Senior quintet leads

Medina Journal-Register — Five veteran seniors anchor the lineup for the Medina High varsity baseball squad which is scheduled to begin non league pre season action with three contests next week, weather permitting.

That quintet includes Tyler Colonna (infield/pitcher), Jake Cotriss (outfield/catcher/pitcher), Danny Barnes (infield/pitcher), Zach Newton (first base) and Dustin Wells (outfield/pitcher). Cotriss earned second team Niagara-Orleans All-League honors.

The Mustangs roster also includes juniors Sam Crowley (infield), Marc Vanderlaan (infield), Hayden Allis (outfield) and Adam Hoot (pitcher/first base) along with senior Joe Meyer (utility) and sophomores Jason Hellwig (catcher/pitcher/infield), Josh Scroger (outfield/pitcher), Matt Riemer (infield/pitcher) and Lawson Fenton (infield/outfield).

“This group is very versatile,” said coach Eric Hellwig who takes over the varsity helm from Todd Bensley after guiding the JV squad for several years. “We’re pretty young but it’s a scrappy group that will fight to be competitive.”

The Mustangs major loss was on the mound with the graduation of the trio of Jake Miller, Stephen Rogenmoser and Scott Petry who handled most of the pitching duties last year. In addition key losses to graduation included catcher Zach Houseman and shortstop Ron Washak. Rogenmoser earned first team N-O All-League honors and Washak was a second team honoree.

“We have to fill some major holes,”Hellwig said. “Offensively we’ve got to create opportunities. We’ll see how things shake out.”

Medina is scheduled to scrimmage Oakfield-Alabama on Monday and then host Starpoint on Wednesday and Lockport on Thursday, both at 4:30 p.m.

The Mustangs are slated to open the Niagara-Orleans League season at home on April 9 against CSAT.

Medina went 6-8 in N-O action and 11-11 overall last spring.
