Medina stickmen romp in opener

Medina Journal-Register — Opening the season in explosive fashion, Medina erupted for 10 goals in the first quarter to key a 20-1 victory over Batavia Thursday in a non league contest at Vets Park.

Ben Austin scored six goals while Kyle Barna and Derek Fuller both netted five to spearhead the Medina attack. Drew McMurray chipped in with two and Matt Zacher and Aaron felt one each. Fuller also had five assists and Austin four.

“We got off to a fast start and that was important,” said Medina coach Gordy Luthart. “We definitely were ready to play.”

Medina took charge at the outset grabbing a 2-0 lead in the first minute as Fuller scored off an assist from Barna and Barna tallied from Austin.

Two more lightning quick tallies by Fuller and one by Barna quickly boosted the Mustangs lead to 5-0.

Austin, Barna and Fuller each scored a total of three goals and Zacher one in the decisive first period which ended with the Mustangs in command by a 10-1 margin.

Austin tacked on a pair of goals and Barna and McMurray each added one in the second period helping to boost the Mustangs lead to 14-1 at the half.

Two goals by Fuller and one by Austin in the third period upped the Medina advantage to 17-1 at the three-quarter mark.

Goals by Barna, McMurray and Feltz in the final period wrapped up the Mustangs high scoring afternoon.

“The kids played very well. I was pleased with the effort for a first game,” said Luthart. “I knew we could score some goals but I was also real pleased with the way our defense played. Our long poles really did a nice job.”

Medina next hosts Lockport at 12 p.m. Saturday at Vets in another non league game.
