Pitching will be key to Mustangs fortunes

Medina Journal-Register — In fast pitch softball pitching is the name of the game and that is the one big question mark area for Medina as the Mustang prepare for the upcoming Niagara-Orleans League campaign.

“The game is pitching,” said Mark Kruzynski who returns to the Mustangs coaching helm after an absence of several seasons. “The kids are working hard and if we get the pitching in place we look to be competitive but that’s key.”

The Mustangs return a good nucleus of veteran players led by senior pitcher/shortstop Stormi Kruger who earned first team N-O All-League honors last year and senior outfielder Olivia Hermann who was a second team All-League selection.

The veteran contingent also includes seniors Jessica Rosenbeck (infield), Jen Molisani (infield/outfield), Arden Zavitz (outfield) and Ariel Bloom (infield/outfield) along with juniors Emma Fish (catcher/pitcher/infield) and Kelsey Evoy (catcher/outfield).

The Mustangs roster also includes senior Nakisha Jones (infield/outfield) and juniors Max Wright (infield/outfield), Liz Meyer (infield/outfield), Hailey Jakubowski (catcher/infield/outfield), Emilee Austin (infield/outfield) and Mallorie Wienke (infield/outfield).

“We’ve got a lot of experience back and they’ve got a good, positive attitude,” said Kruzynski who previously guided the Mustangs for seven seasons from 2000-2006, a stretch which saw the Mustangs claim their last N-O title (2005). “It’s fun being back,” he added .”It’s a good group to work with and now it’s just a matter of putting it together.”

Weather permitting, Medina is scheduled to begin competition Wednesday with a non league game at Lyndonville. The Mustangs are also slated to face Grand Island on April 3 before opening the N-O season at home April 8 against CSAT.

Medina went 3-11 in N-O action and 3-12 overall last spring.
