Medina stickman surge past Wilson

Medina Journal-Register — Galloping out to a commanding 6-0 first quarter lead, Medina went on to defeat Wilson 13-3 Tuesday at Vets Park in the Class C Division season opener for both schools.

Kyle Barna had seven goals and four assists to spearhead the Medina attack. Brett Pecoraro, Derek Fuller and Ben Austin each chipped in with a pair of goals and Aaron Feltz had three assists.

Taking charge at the outset, Medina jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the first three and a half minutes on goals by Barna and Fuller.

Two more goals by Barna followed by a pair of tallies by Pecoraro boosted the Mustangs advantage to 6-0 before the contest was eight minutes old.

The Medina advantage jumped to 9-0 by halftime as Barna scored twice and Fuller once in the second quarter.

“For the second game in a row we got off to a quick start but then we got a little sloppy,” said Medina coach Gordy Luthart. “We’ve got to eliminate the mistakes and be more consistent.”

In the second half, Austin netted a goal in both the third and fourth quarters and Barna had a pair of tallies in the fourth.

Wilson got second half goals by Zach Manani, Justin Westmorland and Zach Magoon.

Now at 2-0 overall, Medina next visits Amherst at 5:30 p.m. Thursday in a key Class C Division contest.

“The opposition will be tougher in that one so we’ve got to play better and cut down on the mistakes,” said Luthart.
