A lone second half goal proved to be just enough to earn No. 10 seed Iroquois a 1-0 victory over No. 7 Medina/Lyndonville Tuesday at Vets Park in the pre-quarterfinals of the Section VI Class A-2 playoffs.

Jack Smolarek scored the decisive goal for the Chiefs on a shot from right in front of the goal with 22:05 remaining in the second half.

Medina/Lyndonville came battling back down the stretch but could not capitalize on several big opportunities including line drive shot which was stopped by Iroquois goalie Matt Glowny with six minutes remaining, a corner chance with 3:30 remaining and finally a hard shot from close range with a minute to go.

In the first half, the Mustangs missed an opportunity on a wide open net and then just missed on a header.

“It was a tough one. We had our chances,” Medina/Lyndonville coach Steve Luksch said. “We played hard but they are a very good team. They pass the ball well and have good speed. Both teams gave it everything they had.”

Medina finishes the season at 7-9-1 while Iroquois advances to a quarterfinal round meeting with No. 2 seed Lake Shore on Thursday.

Class B-2 pre-quarterfinal action gets under way this afternoon as No. 10 Roy-Hart visits No. 7 Fredonia and No. 8 Wilson hosts No. 9 Westfield-Brocton.
