Medina Journal-Register — An old Niagara-Orleans League rivalry will be renewed as Medna faces the host Spartans in the opening round of the Starpoint Tournament at 6:30 p.m. Thursday.

Medina faced Starpoint for nearly 50 years while the Spartans were members of the N-O league from the 1956-57 to 2003-04 seasons.

Ironicically, the Mustangs and Spartans shared the N-O title with identical 12-2 records during Starpoint's final season in the league.

Medina, which brings a 1-2 record into the tournament, has been led offensively by senior Lonnie Taylor who is averaging 21 points per outing. Dan Brown is averaging 11 points and Jason Hellwig eight.

Lockport will face Niagara Catholic in the opening game at 5 p.m.

The consolation and championship games will be held at 5 and 6:30 pm. Friday.

Last year Medina split a pair of narrow decisions in the tourney. The Mustangs defeated Lockport 67-65 in the first round but then lost 58-58 to Niagara Catholic in the finals.

The Medina girls squad will also be in holiday tourney action as the Mustangs face Wayland-Cohocton in the opening round of the Avon Tournament at 6:30 p.m. Thursday. Avon will face Wilson Magnet of Rochester in the other opener.

The consolation and championship games are slated for 6:30 and 8 p.m. Friday.
