Medina Journal-Register — Putting together a strong stretch run, Medina downed visiting Akron 50-40 Tuesday in a Niagara-Orleans League girls basketball game.
In other N-O action, Albion edged past host Barker 44-40 and Roy-Hart downed visiting CSAT 70-56.
Tonight Wilson will host rival Newfane in a key mid-season battle of 6-0 teams for the N-O lead.
Alba Perez scored nine of her game high 19 points, Tanisha Robinson seven of her 11 and Kendra Hil all of her six to spearhead a big 22-12 fourth quarter uprising that keyed Medina to the victory.
"We played better in the fourth quarter but we've got to be more consistent," Medina coach Ken Haak said.
Tobie Abrams scored 11 and Courtney Hallet-Jonathan 10 to lead Akron.
There were three ties and five lead changes over the first 12 minutes before Akron put together an 8-0 run and move out to a 24-16 half-time advantage. Hallet-Jonathan had a three and a jumper and Paige Buscaglia a lay-up off a turnover to key that uprising.
However, Medina rallied back into a 28-28 tie at the three-quarter mark as Taylor Miller had a lay-up off a steal and a jumper to start a 10-4 third period Medina run which also included a three by Robinson and a jumper by Bailey Ames.
Keeping the momentum, the Mustangs then used the big 22-12 fourth quarter surge to claim the victory.
A lay-up off a steal by Hill followed quickly by a lay-up by Perez and a rebound bucket by Hill ignited the decisive uprising.
Robinson and Perez took turns hitting back-to-back baskets to up the Medina advantage to 10 at 44-34 with less than three mintues to play.
Perez, who went 9 of 11 from the free throw line on the night, also had 15 rebounds and five steals. Hill added six rebounds and Robinson five steals.
Medina improves to 4-3 in N-O action while Akron drops to 0-7.
Albion 44, Barker 40
BARKER - Rebounding from as much as an 11 point third quarter deficit, Albion used a big 19-7 fourth period scoring burst to key a come-from-behind 44-40 win over Barker.
Sarah Papponetti scored all 10 of her points and Eboni Taylor six of her 13 to spearhead Albion's decisive final period rally.
Barker had held leads of 14-3 after one period, 20-16 at th half and 33-25 at the three-quarter mark.
Justice Nauden, who scored 12, tallied five in both the second and third periods for Albion.
Caitlyn Mason scored 13 to lead Barker.
Albion improves to 5-2 and Barker slips to 2-5.
Roy-Hart 70, CSAT 56
MIDDLEPORT - Olivia Kelkenberg poured in 36 points and grabbed off 14 rebounds to spark Roy-Hart past CSAT 70-56.
Becky Harnish added 10 points and 10 rebounds for Roy-Hart which improves to 3-4.
Inez Sullvian scored 17 and Sam Dugo 15 for CSAT which slips to 1-6.
Roy-Hart jumped unto leads of 24-17 after one quarter and 44-23 at the half as Kelkenberg tallied 12 points in the first quarter and 10 more in the second.
The Lady Rams maintained a 55-34 advantage at the three-quarter mark.
