Medina Journal-Register — Earlier in the season, threes in the final minute lifted Newfane to a narrow 39-37 victory over visiting Medina. In a near instant replay of that earlier meeting, Newfane hit a three with just seven seconds to go in overtime to gain an equally close 57-53 victory over host Medina Thursday in a key Niagara-Orleans League girls game.
Medina had pulled even at 53-53 on a jumper by Bailey Ames with just 13 seconds remaining.
However, Newfane answered right back with Brooke Horning’s third three of the game with just seven seconds to go to claim the victory.
Horning finished with 15 to lead the balanced Newfane attack which also included 11 each by Jordan Beutel and Katie Shaw and 10 by Maddy Pasuite.
Alba Perez scored a game high 24 points for Medina.
The victory boosts Newfane’s record to 9-1 while Medina slips to 6-4.
Newfane led 12-10 after one quarter on two free throws each by Horning and Beutel in the final 20 seconds.
Medina opened the second period with a 12-3 run to grab a seven point, 22-15, advantage. Perez led that rally with eight points including a three and a jumper.
A late three by Tanisha Robinson kept Medina up by four, 26-22, at the half.
Newfane quickly pulled even at 26-26 to open the third period on buckets by Clare Puff and Pasuite but again Medina answered, this time with a 13-4 run, to move back out to a nine point, 39-30, advantage. Perez tallied six and Kendra Hill five to lead that surge.
Newfane did cut the deficit back to four, 39-35, at the three-quarter mark after a three by Beutel and a rebound bucket by Horning.
Medina briefly upped the lead back to eight, at 43-35, early in the final period after back-to-back lay-ups by Abby Button and Ames.
This time it was Newfane’s turn to battle back as the Lady Panthers used a big 12-1 run to rally into a 47-44 lead with 3:50 remaining. A three by Horning ignited that uprising and a three by Beutel capped it off as Shaw chipped in with a bucket off a turnover.
