Medina Journal-Register — In a tight sea-saw battle Akron nipped host Medina 56-54 Thursday to close out the Niagara-Orleans League boys basketball season.
Austin Mietz hit two big three-point shots down the stretch to key the win for Akron in the tight contest which saw 10 ties and nine lead changes.
Steve Poodry scored 15, Gowah Abrams 12 and Sturgis Sundown 10 to lead the balanced attack for Akron which finishes the N-O campaign at 10-4.
Dan Brown took game high honors with 21, including five threes, and Jason Hellwig added 15, including three threes, for Medina which finishes at 3-11 in the league.
Medina grabbed its biggest lead of eight at 20-12 to open the second quarter as Brown and Ryan Thompson hit back-to-back threes.
However, Akron answered with a 14-3 run to close the period and rally into a 26-23 lead at the half and the contest was tight the rest of the way. Poodry netted eight to lead that Tigers uprising including a three and two lay-ups, all off turnovers.
Akron maintained a narrow 38-37 lead at the three-quarter mark as eight points by Sundown led the Tigers in the third period. Hellwig hit two threes and Brown one during that stretch to keep Medina close.
Medina took the lead for what proved to be the last time at 44-42 early in the fourth quarter after a three-point play by Brown.
Akron again answered right back, this time with a key 10-0 run, to regain the lead for good at 52-44 with three minutes remaining. Mietz and Austen Lauricella both hit threes to key that rally.
Back-to-back threes by Hellwig and Thompson did help pull Medina back to within one, 52-51, with 50 seconds to go but the Mustangs could not pull even.
Akron answered back one last time with a big three by Mietz with 15 seconds to go to take a 55-51 lead.
Brown hit a three with 1.6 seconds to go to pull Medina back to within one at 55-54 but that was as close as the Mustangs would get.
BARKER - Jacob Haight scored 19 and Chris Sweeney 16 to spark Barker (6-8) to a 61-51 victory over Albion (2-12).
Ryan Fannin scored 16 and Freddie Koester 10 to pace Albion.
Up 26-20 at the half, Barker used a 16-9 third period scoring edge to open up a little breathing room. Haight and Sweeney both netted eight during that stretch helping the Raiders open up a 42-29 advantage at the thee-quarter mark.
MIDDLEPORT - Rebounding from a 13 point half-time deficit, CSAT rallied to nip Roy-Hart 60-59 to complete a 14-0 N-O championship season.
Darnell Carson scored 17, Alex Santos 16 and Jorge Brown 10 to spark the offense for CSAT which used a 19-10 third period surge to get back in the game after trailing 36-23 at the half. The Eagles then outscored the Rams 18-13 down the stretch to rally for the win.
Blake Copella scored 20, Brad Bobbitt 13 and Ryan Farewell 12 for Roy-Hart which finishes the N-O season at 9-5.
Farewell netted eight in the opening quarter to help Roy-Hart jump out to a 20-9 lead. The Rams maintained a 36-23 advantage at the half.
WILSON - Connor Sears scored 15, Reid Weber 11 and Byran Geise 10 to spark Newfane past rival Wilson 64-37 as the Panthers lock up second place in the final N-O standings at 11-3. Sears also had eight assists and Weber seven steals.
Matthew Baker took game high honors with 17 for Wilson which finishes at 1-13.
Newfane jumped out to a 17-6 first period lead and maintained a 28-20 advantage at the half.
