Medina, Albion girls cap N-O with wins

Medina Journal-Register — Medina and Albion both closed out the Niagara-Orleans League girls basketball season on a winning note Thursday.

Medina defeated host Akron 41-35 and Albion downed visiting Barker 37-23 as both local squads finish the N-O campaign at 9-5.

In other N-O action Wilson, which has already locked up the title, bested rival Newfane 46-32 to improve to 13-0 and CSAT downed Roy-Hart 56-52.

Alba Perez had 24 points and 18 rebounds to spearhead the Medina attack. Abby Button added 10 rebounds and Bailey Ames six for the Mustangs.

Tobie Abrams scored 12 and Gina Henley 10 for Akron which finishes at 4-10.

Medina jumped out to a 22-13 halftime lead but Akron answered with a 12-6 third period surge to make the finish close.

Perez had two big buckets down the stretch, one on a rebound, and Oliva Hermann went three of four from the line to help Medina lock up the victory.

Albion 37

Barker 23

ALBION - Eboni Taylor had 11 points and Justice Nauden 10 to lead Albion past Barker 37-23.

The Purple Eagles also got a big effort on the boards from Kelsee Soule who grabbed off 14 rebounds and Sarah Papponetti who had nine.

Albion led 14-8 at the half and 23-11 at the three-quarter mark.

Wilson 46

Newfane 32

NEWFANE - Dana Smith had 13 points, 10 rebounds and four steals, Jamie Curry 11 points, 11 rebounds and six steals and Kate Placek 10 points, six rebounds and four steals to lead Wilson past Newfane 46-32.

Maddy Passuite netted 16 for Newfane which finishes at 10-4.

Wilson built up leads of 12-6 after one quarter and 24-8 at the half.

CSAT 56

Roy-Hart 52

BUFFALO - Mae Jones scored 15 to lead CSAT (2-11) past Roy-Hart (4-10) 56-52.

Becky Harnish scored 15, Olivia Kelkenberg 11 and Taylor Fry eight for Roy-Hart which trailed 32-27 at the half.
