Elba surges past Albion

Medina Journal-Register — ALBION - Unable to keep the momentum from a strong start, Albion dropped a 50-34 decision to Elba Wednesday in the Purple Eagles non league season opener.

Albion roared out to a 13 point, 22-9, advantage early in the second quarter but managed a total of only 12 more points the rest of the way.

Kyle Morse poured in a game high 21 points, including 12 in the decisive fourth quarter, to spark Elba which also got eight apiece fro Chad Kowalik and Jesse Plaumer.

Freddie Koester and Tre Allport each scored 10 for Albion which also had Connor Barleben, Marquise Riddick and Ryan Fannin each tally four and Jackson Hamilton two.

Putting together a 12-0 run, which included lay-ups off turnovers by Allport and Barleben along with a rebound bucket by Koester, Albion moved out to a 15-6 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Back-to-back lay-ups by Koester and a three by Allport then boosted the Purple Eagles advantage to 22-9 three minutes into the second quarter.

Elba though got right back into the game by closing the period with a 9-2 run, including six by Morse, to cut the deficit to 24-18 at the half.

Keeping the momentum, the Lancers then outpointed the Purple Eagles 10-4 in the third period to rally into a 28-28 tie as a combination of turnovers and cold shooting took its toll on Albion.

Morse then took charge at the outset of the final stanza scoring Elba’s first 12 points, including back-to-back three-point plays first off a fast break and then off a turnover keying a 16-0 Lancer run that put the visitors in control 44-28 with 3:50 remaining.

Albion was plagued by a disastrous combination of six turnovers and zero of six shooting from the field during the decisive first four minutes of the final quarter.

Albion next hosts Burgard on Dec. 12.
