Purple Eagles down Mustang grapplers

Medina Journal-Register — Building up as much as a 25 point advantage, Albion downed host Medina 40-36 Wednesday in a Niagara-Orleans League match.

Sam Remley (126), Ed Wolfe (170) and Aaron Mulroy (182) all registered pins for Albion which also got a key overtime win by Dylan Burkhardt (220) as well as decision wins by Blake Aina (120) and Aaron Burnside (132).

Brennen Callara (106), Rob Wendt (152) and Matt Montesanti (285) all notched pins for Medina which also got decision wins by Ben Howell (145) and Joe Velez (113).

Albion jumped out to a 19-0 lead at the outset on a third period pin by Remley, decision wins by Aina and Burnside and a forfeit.

The Purple Eagles went on to up the advantage to 31-9 after a first period pin by Wolfe and then to 40-15 after a first period fall by Wolfe and the clutch overtime decision win by Burkhardt.

“Kevin’s win was the one that put us over the top. He wrestled smart. He wrested within himself and he got the takedown,” Albion coach Keith Piccirilli said. “The kids met the challenge. I’m very happy with the effort and the win.”

Medina made the final score close by winning the last four bouts on sub-minute pins by Montesanti and Callara, a forfeit and a decision by Velez.

Albion is now 1-0 and Medina 1-1 in N-O action.

Newfane 66, Wilson 13

Jake Kubala (160), Casey Kubiiniec (285), Paul Dunbar (126), Cyrus Simons (132), Katrell Jackson (138), Nate Martin (145) and Dakota Hildebrand (152) all registered pins to spark Newfane past rival Wilson.

Brian Kerwin (220) and John Shaffer (120) had pins for Wilson.

Newfane is now 1-1 and Wilson 0-2.

Akron 57, Barker 22

Pins by Noah Karczewski (106), Derek Schultz (152), Jordan Truglio (160), Adrian Ross (170) and Nick Paolucci (220) led Akron past Barker.

Dylan Mangin (145) had a pin for Barker.

Akron is now 2-0 and Barker 0-2.
