Medina Journal-Register — SANBORN - Unable to recover from a disastrous second quarter, Wilson bowed 59-36 to Olean in the Section VI Class B state qualifier Tuesday at Niagara County Commnity College.
Trailing by only four,16-12, after one period, Wilson struggled through a frigid 1 of 16 shooting stretch in the second quarter with five turnovers. Olean took full advantage of that drought to put together a 15-3 scoring run to open up a 16 point, 31-15, advantage at the half.
A three by Kaylee Pearl and a lay-up by Maggie Moore, both off turnovers, highlighted the Olean surge which was capped off by a three by Emily Bantelman.
The lid stayed firmly on the basket for Wilson in the third period (4 of 17 from the field) as Olean stretched its advantage to 20, 45-25, at the three-quarter mark. Three lay-ups by Sara Ziegler, who along with Moore controlled play inside, led that spurt.
Wilson grabbed its only lead of 4-0 at the outset as Emily Lasher scored twice, both off turnovers.
However, Olean quickly settled down and answered with a 16-8 run to close the period to rally into the lead for good at 16-12. Moore had six points and Pearl and Rachel Painter both chipped in with threes to lead the Lady Huskies rally.
“We got off to a good start but they caught fire in the second quarter and as a team we just didn’t shoot the ball well,” Wilson coach Brian Baker said. “The effort was there and we got good looks we just didn’t shoot well.”
Pearl finished with a game high 15 points as Ziegler added 14 and Moore 13.
Lasher led Wilson with 13, eight of which came in the opening period. Dana Smith added eight.
Olean advances to the Class B Far West Regional Friday at Buffalo State.
Wilson advanced to the state qualifier by defeating Buffalo Arts 58-34 for the Class B-2 title while Olean topped East Aurora 46-30 for the Class B-1 crown.
